APOD cat "Eta Carinae star sentenced
Eta Carinae may be about to explode. But nobody knows when: may be next year, could be in a million years. The mass of Eta Carinae, around 100 times larger than our Sun, making it an excellent candidate for a supernova explosion. Historical records show that 150 years ago, Eta Carinae underwent an explosion that became one of the brightest stars in the southern sky. It is believed that Eta Carinae nebula keyhole is the only star that emits laser light naturally. This photograph, taken in 1996, revealed new details of the unusual gift cards nebula surrounding gift cards this star alone. They are clearly two lobes, a hot central region and strange radial streaks. The lobes are filled with bands of gas and dust which absorb the blue and ultraviolet light emitted near the center. Stripes are still unexplained.
